Modelling Cargo Bikes in London’s Road Network
Cargo bikes are increasingly replacing Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs) for last-mile deliveries, with shifts of up to 30% expected in parts of Central London by 2030. To assess the impacts of this transition, Transport for London (TfL) developed a detailed PTV Vissim microsimulation model using cargo bike parameters derived from TRL research. The results show mixed effects: while cars, taxis, and LGVs see slight delay reductions (up to 9%), cyclists face increased delays of up to 28%, particularly in narrow cycle lanes.
