The city of Essen is developing an environmentally sensitive real-time traffic management system as part of the COMO (Connected Mobility Essen) project. Using state-of-the-art sensor technology, AI-based traffic and environmental detection, and PTV software solutions such as PTV Optima and PTV Flows, the system aims to improve air quality and optimize traffic flow. The goal is to enable data-driven traffic control that takes environmental impacts into account, helping to prevent limit value exceedances and promote sustainable mobility.

The system integrates 14 environmental sensors measuring pollutants such as NO₂, particulate matter, and ozone, as well as AI-powered video detection at 48 traffic junctions. It is complemented by a new digital traffic management center, which acts as a control hub and central information platform. Based on real-time and forecast data, the system enables short-term interventions such as adjusting signal programs, managing traffic through dynamic message signs, or rerouting flows.

The webinar will showcase how Essen is successfully balancing mobility and environmental quality through the use of innovative technologies and strategies in real-world operation – taking a major step toward sustainable and future-oriented urban mobility.

The webinar will be held in German.
